Creating engaging video content on social media can seem daunting to many. But according to Ajdin Crnovic, an expert in humor and value-creating content for B2B companies, it's easier to get started than you might think. Here he shares concrete tips on how to overcome fear and start building your personal brand through video.
"You can go extremely far with this," says Ajdin, referring to his mobile phone. He recommends starting by recording yourself in front of your phone, sharing a personal story from your work life or giving valuable tips within your area of expertise.
"Record that video without overthinking. Try to say one sentence at a time," he advises. The most important thing is to get started, not to be perfect from the beginning.
For editing the video material, Ajdin recommends the app CapCut, which is free to use.
"Start playing around in that app and cut out all unnecessary fluff. Try to put together a 30-second video," he explains. "Then you'll probably see - wow, it actually turned out pretty damn good even though the whole video looked like complete crap."
Other useful tools are Canva for graphic design and ChatGPT for idea generation and text processing.
A common beginner's mistake is talking too much about yourself and your company. Ajdin emphasizes the importance of always starting from what the viewer gets out of the content:
"In the end, nobody cares. That's how it is. You always have to start from what everyone else gets out of what I want to share."
He recommends focusing on providing valuable tips, inspiration, or entertainment related to your expertise. Humor is a powerful tool for capturing attention and creating engagement.
To build a following, consistency is important. Ajdin recommends focusing on one platform to start with, for example LinkedIn for B2B.
"At least try to set a strategy where you have a continuity of 2-3 posts a week. So what does that become? 10 posts a month-ish, that's enough," he says.
Sharing personal experiences and thoughts creates a stronger connection with followers. Ajdin believes it's okay to be personal, as long as you keep it at a professional level:
"You're extremely personal and with a twinkle in your eye. But it doesn't become cringey private. That's something you wouldn't have shared. It's still kept at a very professional level with you, I think."
Ajdin likes to experiment with different types of content to see what works best. Some formats he uses successfully are:
To stand out in the feed, it's important to think creatively about how to present your message. Ajdin gives an example of how a cleaning company can create engaging content by focusing on the real problem they solve:
"The actual problem that you, as a cleaning company, solve is the everyday squabbles between couples at home. [...] Where you just show the irritation of having a roommate: Damn, he left that Coca-Cola can again. He left his underwear on the floor again. He hasn't taken out the trash again."
By showing relatable frustration in everyday life, you create an emotional connection with the viewer, which is much more effective than just showing before and after pictures of cleaning.
Ajdin admits that he himself felt "complete stomach ache" the first time he recorded a video of himself. But he encourages others to challenge themselves and dare to take the step:
"When I then shared it, I realized, wow, this actually went pretty well."
Getting over the initial fear is often the hardest step. But once you've done it a few times, it gets easier, and the results often speak for themselves.
By following these tips from Ajdin, you can get started with creating engaging video content that strengthens your personal brand on LinkedIn and other social platforms. The key is to dare to take the step, focus on providing value, and be consistent in your posting. Over time, you will build up both experience and a loyal following that appreciates your content.
